The Kentucky School

A Common House for the Kentucky Repertoire

Welcome to The Kentucky School, where we serve, share, and showcase the Kentucky repertoire. Through workshops and performances, we provide access to the traditional arts that have sustained a high quality of life for generations of Kentuckians, arts that are native to this place and rooted in African, Eastern European, Scots-Irish, and First Nation influence.  If you want to enjoy Kentucky music, dance, literature, woodworking, gardening, food, or storytelling, The Kentucky School is your neighborhood meeting place.

By Day: We are a classroom, inviting the region’s most skilled traditional artists and artisans to share their practice with you.

By Night: We are a listening-room style venue for intimate performances by groundbreaking musicians inspired by tradition.

Believing that all art is local, The Kentucky School promotes cultural democracy through fun, learning, and general neighborliness. We agree with Jane Addams, when she said, “The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.”
